To worship the Holy and Living God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as Romano Guardini reminded us nearly a century ago in discussing liturgy as play, is irrelevant in terms of productivity. To be a friend and neighbor requires more than input-output, it requires the meanderings of flesh and bone. And that really is at the heart of too many conversations about relevance. Productivity. It is the complete capitulation of the life of faith to the terms of our economic culture.
But God’s Economy starts with the awesome encounter of His self-gift in Christ Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit, and no more so than in Holy Communion. This relationship, not relevance, is at the heart of Christian faith and life.
